Alberta Innovates Grants for Startups: What's Open (and What's Not) in 2026

Alberta Innovates is Alberta's provincial innovation agency — the main source of non-federal grant funding for tech startups based in the province. Its funding programs are structured in tiers, from small vouchers for early-stage services up to $500K commercialization grants. The catch in 2026: several of its most-used entry-level programs are currently closed, and there's no confirmed reopening date. This guide covers what's actually available right now, not just the full program list.

    What's closed right now

The Voucher Program, Micro Voucher Program, and Industry R&D Associates (IR&A) program — Alberta Innovates' most accessible entry points for early-stage companies — all closed their most recent continuous intake on May 29, 2026, with no confirmed reopening date as of this writing. If you were planning to apply to any of these, don't build a timeline around them until Alberta Innovates announces a reopen date.

    • Micro Vouchers (up to $10K, rolling intake) — for quick access to expert services
    • Vouchers (up to $100K) — for R&D, IP, prototyping, or commercialization projects
    • Industry R&D Associates — subsidized technical hires embedded in your company

Check Alberta Innovates' website directly before assuming any of these are open — this is exactly the kind of status change FundScout tracks in its grant news updates.

    What's still open

Commercialization Grants — up to $500,000

Direct commercialization funding to help tech startups move from prototype to global market. This is the larger, later-stage counterpart to the (currently closed) Voucher program — aimed at companies past initial R&D and validation, ready to scale a product that already works.

Alberta Scaleup and Growth Accelerators Program

Free to participate in, and — notably — no equity is taken from participating companies. Open to Alberta-based tech startups and small businesses looking for structured growth support rather than direct project funding. If your priority right now is operational scaling support rather than R&D dollars, this is worth checking even while the Voucher programs are paused.

Eligibility requirements (Voucher Program, for when it reopens)

Worth knowing now so you're ready to move the moment intake resumes:

    • For-profit SME with fewer than 500 full-time employees and under $50M in annual gross revenue
    • Incorporated or registered (corporation or partnership) with a significant Alberta footprint
    • Minimum 25% cash contribution toward total eligible project costs
    • Eligible activities: new product R&D, advanced design and prototyping, product testing and refinement, patent development, and market assessments delivered through approved service providers

    How to apply

For the currently-open programs (Commercialization Grants, Scaleup and Growth Accelerators), applications go through Alberta Innovates' own portal — there's no bank or third-party intermediary. Both are merit-assessed, so come prepared with a clear technical description, market evidence, and a realistic budget or growth plan, the same fundamentals that matter across federal programs like IRAP.

What to do while the Voucher programs are closed

Don't wait idle for a reopen date that may not come soon. Alberta startups can stack federal programs in the meantime — IRAP and SR&ED both run independently of provincial intake windows and have no fixed deadlines. Prep the documentation the Voucher program will eventually want (technical description, budget, 25% cash contribution plan) so you're ready to apply the day intake resumes, rather than starting from zero.
