British Columbia Tech Startup Grants: The Complete 2026 Guide
BC gives tech startups access to over $1.8 billion across federal programs, the BC Innovation Tax Credit, Innovate BC grants, and sector-specific funding for cleantech and ocean technology. This guide covers what's actually available in 2026, layered from federal down to BC-specific.
Start federal
Before anything BC-specific, confirm these — they apply regardless of province and are usually the largest dollar amounts available:
- NRC-IRAP — up to $500K in non-repayable R&D salary support
- SR&ED — 35% federal refundable credit on up to $6M of eligible R&D spend
BC Innovation Tax Credit (BCITC)
A provincial refundable R&D tax credit that stacks directly on top of federal SR&ED — it's calculated on the same qualifying R&D expenditures, not a separate application process. If your accountant is claiming federal SR&ED without also filing for BCITC, you're leaving provincial money on the table on work you've already documented.
Innovate BC programs
BC Fast Pilot
Up to $200,000 for BC-based SMEs to pilot and demonstrate new technologies in real-world conditions — aimed at companies past the R&D stage with a working technology that needs a real-world proof point before commercialization.
New Ventures BC Competition
An annual competition for BC's most promising early-stage startups, offering six months of mentorship, education, and high-profile investor exposure. Not direct cash in the way a grant is, but a genuine non-dilutive path to capital-raising readiness for pre-revenue or idea-stage companies that don't yet qualify for IRAP or SR&ED.
Sector-specific funding
BC runs dedicated programs for cleantech, ocean technology, and film — worth checking specifically if you're building in one of these sectors, since the applicant pool is smaller than general tech grants while funding levels are often comparable or better.
How to stack it
A typical BC deep-tech stack: IRAP funds R&D salaries directly, SR&ED refunds a share of the same salaries federally, BCITC adds a further provincial refund on the same expenditures, and BC Fast Pilot funds a separate real-world validation project once the technology works. None of these disqualify each other.
