The Best Non-Dilutive Funding Options for Canadian Startups in 2026

Ranked by a combination of dollar value and how accessible each program actually is to a typical Canadian startup — not just theoretical maximums. For the full framework on how these programs work together, see our guide to what non-dilutive funding actually is.

    1. SR&ED — up to $2.1M/year refundable

The single largest lever for most startups. 35% refundable federal tax credit on up to $6M of eligible R&D spend for CCPCs. No competitive application — you document your R&D and claim it annually. See our full SR&ED guide and how to protect your claim.

    2. NRC-IRAP — up to $500K non-repayable

No application form, no deadline — relationship-based through an Industrial Technology Advisor. The best entry point for pre-revenue startups with genuine technical uncertainty. Check if you qualify.

    3. NGen — $150K–$5M for manufacturing-adjacent tech

Canada's Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster. Requires 1:1 to 2:1 matching, so it's for companies with capital to co-invest, but the dollar amounts are the largest on this list outside SIF/SRF-scale programs. Full NGen breakdown.

    4. CanExport SMEs — up to $50K per new export market

50% cost-sharing on trade shows, market research, and international business travel — one of the fastest federal grants to win, with decisions in 3–4 weeks. Complete CanExport guide.

    5. Mitacs Accelerate — $7,500 for a full-time researcher, 4 months

The most underused program on this list. Pay $7,500, Mitacs matches it, and you get a graduate researcher full-time on your technical problem for 4 months. Stacks with SR&ED, cutting net cost to roughly $4,500. How it works.

    6. NSERC Engage — $25,000 to the university, you contribute $12,500

A 6-month research collaboration with a professor's lab. Faster than most federal programs — decisions in 4–6 weeks. Full guide.

    7. CSBFP — up to $1.15M in guaranteed loan financing

Not a grant, but genuinely non-dilutive: the government guarantees 85% of a bank loan, getting startups approved for equipment and leasehold improvements they'd otherwise be declined for. Often faster than any grant — 2–3 weeks at your own bank. Full guide.

    8. Provincial R&D tax credits (OITC, BCITC, and others)

Stack directly on top of federal SR&ED for an additional refund on the same documented R&D spend. If you're claiming SR&ED and not checking your province's equivalent credit, you're leaving money unclaimed on work you've already done the paperwork for.
