Grant News: May 2026 — Deadlines, Updates, and What to Watch

FundScout's first monthly grant news round-up. We track deadline changes, new programs, and funding shifts across 300+ Canadian grants so you don't have to.

    Deadlines This Month

CanExport SMEs — Rolling, Apply Now

CanExport SMEs has no fixed deadline — applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. However, federal fiscal year-end is March 31, and application volumes surge in Q4 (Jan–Mar). May is an excellent time to apply: low competition, fast decisions, full-year budget available. If you're planning international trade activity for fall 2026, apply now before you book anything.

NSERC Engage — Rolling, 4–6 Week Turnaround

Engage grants have no intake deadline. Applications are reviewed year-round. Summer is a good time to establish professor relationships — academics have more availability in May–August than during the teaching year. If you want a collaboration starting in September, the application needs to be in by mid-July.

    Mitacs Accelerate — Rolling

Applications are accepted year-round. Note that university terms affect intern availability. If you want a student starting in September, submit your application in June to allow time for matching and approval.

    Program Updates

SR&ED: 2025 Fiscal Year Claims Due

If your fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, your SR&ED claim deadline is June 30, 2026 — 18 months from fiscal year end. Companies operating on a calendar year basis: do not miss this. SR&ED claims cannot be filed retroactively after the 18-month window closes. If you haven't engaged a preparer yet, do it this week.

CDAP: Program Closed to New Applications

The Canada Digital Adoption Program closed to new intake in 2024. If you have an existing approved CDAP grant, your advisor should still be able to complete your digital plan and unlock the BDC loan component. Contact your advisor or BDC branch directly if you have questions about existing approvals.

WD / Prairies Economic Development Canada

Prairies Economic Development Canada (formerly WD) is operating under updated program guidelines for 2026. Project applications are assessed on a merit basis by regional officers. If you're in AB, BC, SK, or MB and have a scale-up or commercialization project, now is a good time to reach out to your regional PrairiesCan office to gauge fit before investing in a full application.

    What's New This Month

    FundScout Now Shows Verification Badges

Every grant in FundScout now shows a verification badge: green for data checked within 30 days, amber for 31–90 days, red for anything older. We also launched a Data Sources page showing every portal we monitor. Transparency about data freshness is table stakes for a platform handling decisions this important.

8 Grants Now Have Plain-English Summaries

IRAP, SR&ED, CanExport, CSBFP, Mitacs Accelerate, NSERC Engage, WD Innovate, and CDAP now show a plain-English summary, difficulty score, estimated time to apply, and top rejection reasons directly on your quiz results. More grants getting this treatment through May and June.

    FundScout Tip of the Month

Apply before you spend. The most common rejection reason across CanExport, NRC IRAP, and most contribution programs is that applicants incur costs before receiving approval. The rule is almost universal: grant approval must precede the expense. If you're planning trade show travel, equipment purchases, or a university collaboration in Q3, identify the right program and apply in May — before you book anything.
