How Import and Specialty Trade Businesses Access Grant Funding

Import and specialty trade businesses, companies sourcing goods internationally and selling them in Canada, or exporting Canadian goods through trade relationships, sit in an unusual spot in the grant system. Most programs are built around either exporting or manufacturing, and trade-focused businesses doing neither directly can miss funding that technically applies to them.

    Export-side funding

If a trade business is actively selling Canadian goods internationally, not just importing, CanExport applies the same way it does to any exporter: covering trade show, travel, and market research costs tied to building the relationships that make specialty trade work.

    Supply chain and sourcing innovation

Businesses developing new sourcing models, traceability systems, or ethical supply chain verification processes may qualify for innovation funding if the work involves genuine technical or process novelty, not just new supplier relationships.

Where most trade businesses miss funding

Specialty trade doesn't map cleanly to "manufacturer," "exporter," or "tech startup," so founders in this space often assume they don't qualify for anything. In practice, most of these businesses are eligible for at least export-side funding if any portion of their revenue involves selling internationally.
