Ontario Tech Startup Grants: The Complete 2026 Guide

Ontario has more tech startups than any other province, and correspondingly more funding programs — federal money that applies everywhere, plus a layer of Ontario-specific tax credits, sector grants, and free accelerators that non-Ontario founders don't have access to. This guide covers both layers, in the order most Ontario founders should actually check them.

Start with the federal programs — they apply regardless of province

Before anything Ontario-specific, confirm your federal eligibility. These aren't optional extras — for most tech startups they're the largest dollar amounts available:

    • NRC-IRAP — up to $500K in non-repayable R&D salary support, no application form, relationship-based through an Industrial Technology Advisor
    • SR&ED — 35% refundable federal tax credit on up to $6M of eligible R&D spend
    • CanExport SMEs — 50% of costs to enter a new export market, up to $50K

    Ontario-specific programs

    Ontario Innovation Tax Credit (OITC)

A provincial R&D tax credit that stacks on top of federal SR&ED — it doesn't replace it. Eligible Ontario CCPCs can claim OITC alongside their federal SR&ED credit on the same qualifying expenditures, meaningfully increasing your total refund rate on the same R&D dollars. If your accountant is filing SR&ED without also checking OITC eligibility, you're leaving provincial money unclaimed.

Ontario Centres of Innovation (OCI) and OVIN

OCI runs commercialization and voucher-style programs connecting Ontario startups with academic and industry partners. The Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) is sector-specific — funding for automotive, EV, and mobility technology startups building in or around Ontario's auto sector.

Digital media and interactive tech grants

Ontario runs dedicated non-dilutive programs for video games, XR/AR experiences, and digital storytelling platforms — typically covering up to 50% of eligible project costs. If you're building in gaming, immersive tech, or interactive media, these programs exist specifically because Ontario treats digital media as a distinct sector, not generic "tech."

    Targeted programs for underrepresented founders

Ontario also runs sector- and demographic-specific funding — for example, dedicated multi-year funding for Black-led tech startups. If you qualify for a program's demographic criteria, these are worth checking specifically because they're less competitive than general tech grants (smaller applicant pool against a dedicated budget) while offering comparable or better funding levels.

Accelerators: not cash, but real non-dilutive value

Ontario is unusually dense with free, equity-free accelerators and incubators — DMZ, MaRS Discovery District, Communitech, ventureLAB, and the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL). None of these hand you a cheque directly, but they provide mentorship, investor access, and — often — direct introductions to the grant programs above. If you're early enough that you don't yet qualify for IRAP or SR&ED (pre-revenue, pre-technical-hire), an accelerator can be the fastest path to becoming eligible.

How to stack federal and Ontario provincial funding

None of the programs above are mutually exclusive. A typical stack for an Ontario SaaS or deep-tech startup: IRAP funds the R&D salaries directly, SR&ED refunds a portion of the same salaries at tax time, OITC adds a further provincial refund on that same spend, and OCI or a digital media grant funds a specific commercialization or content project running in parallel. The constraint is rarely eligibility — it's whether you have the bandwidth to manage several applications and reporting cycles at once.
